Anti-Racism

Ideology

The concept of Anti-Racist struggles and organisation in Britain developed as resistance to the institutional and inter-personal racism new migrants suffered (and still suffer) in areas of employment and policing etc. It ideologically puts itself in a wider historical and social context, constantly drawing parallels with colonialism and the oppression of other marginalised groups.

The movement has constantly evolved with the changing faces of racism, developing an anti-fascists front to defend BME communities against openly racist and neo-nazi groups as they emerged. It continues to do so with new trends such as the emergence of Islamaphobia; expressed in Britain through discriminatory ‘anti-terror’ legislation and the activity of groups such as the English Defence League, and the increased persecution of asylum seekers by the border regime and cruelties of refugee detention and deportation.

Action

It is in line with this general philosophy that we work on the following issues:

Talks and discussions examining conceptions of ethnicity, migrant issues and contemporary race politics.
Anti-fasicst activity on the national level campaiging against the British National Party and English Defence Leauge, through work with groups such as Unite Agaisnt Fascism and the Stop Racism nad Fascism Network
Opposing the new Points Based Visa system for international students, such inherently discriminatory measures place international students under strict state surveillance and could result in deportation based on lack of academic involvement.
Assist students in personal hate crime reporting.
Campainging for refugee and migrant justice and against the actions of the border regime with groups such as No Borders and local refugee centres.
