  • UPDATE: Clarification: societies and sports clubs' use of University branding. Isaac Leigh Wed 17 Sep 2014 10:58 *************************UPDATE********************************* The University have asked me to pass this on to you all: "Our advice to clubs and societies is to use the branding they currently use on their materials, including sports kits, until we have new guidelines in place - this should be by the end of the calendar year. If any club or society needs to produce anything new, we recommend that they only produce what they need in the short-term. Please be assured that any sports kit produced for this academic year can be used throughout the academic year. We're working closely with Isaac and Ruby to ensure that we understand exactly what clubs and societies need. If any club or society needs to produce new communications before new guidelines are published, please get in touch with the University Marketing team by email to". I suggest the following, to avoid any grey areas: produce your marketing as you always have until any official guidelines are decided upon by the University. We will make sure that the University consults students on the new brand over the coming year, so that you are not left in the dark like you have been so far.   ******************************************************************* The University yesterday communicated to the Students' Union that societies and sports clubs are no longer allowed to use the University logo or name on their kit, merchandise, flyers or websites - in essence, on ANY form of marketing. We have received clarification early this morning that the reason for this is NOT because the University want to distance themselves from the Students' Union in any way, but because they are working on a re-branding of the University logo and do not want societies and sports clubs to display outdated versions of their brand. We were told yesterday that the issue related to copyright law, but are now informed that this is not the case - a miscommunication that this blog attempts to clear up as quickly as possible! It is disappointing that we as a Students' Union have been told this so close to term, meaning that society and sports club execs will have to change their marketing approaches at very short notice. We believe we should have been informed of this by the University far earlier in the process, to avoid the inconvenience this has caused to execs. However, all marketing that has already been submitted with the University logo and name on it will still be fine for the society and sports club to use in 2014/15. In the meantime, societies and sports clubs are more than welcome to use the Warwick SU logo as a replacement. Societies and sports clubs are one of the University's biggest assets. As Societies Officer I am incredibly proud of all your achievements, and it is absolutely crucial that the University fully understands that not only are our clubs and societies proud to represent Warwick, but that they should be proud of the hugely positive impact that clubs and societies have on the University's reputation - locally, nationally and internationally. You are, in my view, the beating heart of Warwick University! So for those of you who have made this point to me, I could not agree with you more. Once the re-brand is complete - and the University is working extensively on it now - it is vital that clubs and societies are able to display the University logo and name on their kit, merchandise, flyers and websites.
