.Academic Qualifications
The usual requirement is a first or upper second class honours degree. Other comparable academic and professional qualifications from a UK or overseas institution may also be appropriate.

The main funding options are suggested here. However, many postgraduate students fund themselves, often through a combination of savings, loans and earnings.

LEA's usually only fund the postgraduate teaching course (PGCE).

Research Councils award funding for full-time postgraduate courses. To qualify for an award, you must be settled in the UK and have been resident here not wholly or mainly for the purposes of receiving full-time education for the three years immediately before the start of your course.
You normally apply through the academic department where you will be studying. Awards are few and competition for them is great.
The Research Councils are:
- Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)
- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
- Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC)
- Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
- Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
- Medical Research Council (MRC)
- Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
- Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC)
Information about all the UK Research Councils is available at:

Full time and part-time home postgraduate students can apply to the Fund for financial help if they are experiencing severe financial hardship. However they would be expected to have explored other avenues of funding such as Career Development Loans first.

There is very limited financial help from local and national charities. Do not rely on charities to meet the full costs of a course of study. Demand is heavy and the individual criteria are strict.
Lists of trusts and charities for postgraduate funding can be found in: Grants Register or The Directory of Grant-making Trusts.

There is no Government Student Loan scheme for postgraduate students.
You can apply for a Career Development Loan if you intend to work in the UK or the EU after you complete your studies. This is a government-sponsored loan scheme administered through three banks - Barclays, Cooperative, and Royal Bank of Scotland. Freephone 0800 585 505 or see the webpage:
http://www.lifelonglearning.co.uk/cdl/
Some of the major banks offer a postgraduate loan or a professional studies loan. Professional studies are, eg, law, medicine, engineering.
These loans are repayable at commercial rates of interest.

If you are in one of the groups that can claim Income Support as a full-time student, eg, single parents or student with disabilities, you can claim Income Support as a postgraduate student. However, you cannot claim benefits to meet the costs of your tuition fees, only living costs. Any other income you received would affect your benefit.
Single parents, student couples with children, disabled students and couples where the non-student partner is on a low income may be eligible for Housing Benefit.
Part-time students may be able to claim Job Seekers Allowance (if they are available for and actively seeking work) and Housing Benefit.
