Hate Crime

What classifies as a hate crime?
A hate crime is "any incident which is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by prejudice against someone's sex, racial heritage, religion, disability or sexual orientation".
What do I do if I've been a victim of hate crime? What if I don't want to report it to the police?
If you have just been a victim of a hate crime, you may feel the need to talk to someone about it. There are many welfare-related support options available; see our page on Other Support for more information on the choices available.

If you do want to report it, you don't have to report it to the police. If you don't want to report it, that is entirely up to you – but the more people that report hate crime, the more we will understand patterns and the better we will be able to combat prejudice in all its forms.

Also, you don't have to have been the victim of a hate crime to report it - if you saw something happen on the street, then you can report on behalf of the stranger.

Finally, it is worth reiterating that if you report a hate crime, the police don't have to get involved... it only goes as far as you want it to.

Where can I report a hate crime to?
Non-police

  1. You can report it to a Hate Crime Reporting Centre. You decide what action is taken after you report - it could go to the police, it could just be reported to the centre with no further action taken, or a measure in-between. These only exist in the Coventry area.
    • Campus: in the SU, the Welfare Officer is one, as is the Student Advice Centre (both of these can be found on the second floor of SUHQ). The International Office is also a reporting centre for hate crime.
    • Coventry: there are centres dotted around the Coventry area. Incidents reported to Coventry-based centres will be (with your permission) fed back to the Coventry Anti-Harassment Forum. See this PDF for more info.
  2. Anyone can report hate crime (or any crime) anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police

Campus and Coventry: contact your local police station.
Leamington: either contact your local police station, or call Warwickshire Police's dedicated Hate Crime Help Line on 0845 129 2221.
